As stated above, GitLab is a cloud-based integrated development environment(IDE. and web application that helps people and companies alike to cplaborate on their projects. It is an open-source software as well as a SaaS (Software as a Service. The service was started by Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valery Sizov in 2011 in San Francisco, California. In 2015, GitLab raised $1 million funding from venture capital firms Redpoint Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and others. It has been reported that GitLab has become one of the fastest growing open source project in the history.

SendGrid is a cloud-based email infrastructure provider that delivers more than 15 billion emails per month to 2.5 million businesses around the world. It was founded in 2009 by Sameer Dhpakia, Noah Everett, and James Yu. In 2012, SendGrid received $1 million in seed funding from Y Combinator. In 2013, SendGrid closed its Series A funding round with a total of $6 million raised from Silicon Valley-based venture capitalists such as Google Ventures (now CapitalG), Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), Andreessen Horowitz, and First Round Capital. In 2014, SendGrid raised $30 million in Series B funding round led by the growth equity firm Tiger Global Management.

Unlike GitLab, SendGrid is not open-source software. This means that users cannot download or modify the source code themselves even though they are allowed to use it freely. Moreover, users cannot host it on their own servers instead of using SendGrid's servers. However, GitLab is open-source software, which means users have the freedom to build their own version of GitLab if they like. Users can also host GitLab on their own servers if they wish to do so.
