GitLab is a web-based Git repository manager, which was first developed by Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valery Sizov at the Leningrad Branch of St. Petersburg State University in 2011. Since then, it has become an open source project. The purpose of the project was to offer free repository hosting services to all students and academic staff at the university. In 2013, the Leningrad Branch of St. Petersburg State University initiated the merge of GitLab with the Gitorious service, which was also developed at the university. In June 2014, GitLab merged with Gitorious. This merge helped grow GitLab’s user base by 200%.
Google Tasks is a cloud-based application, which allows users to create and organize lists of tasks. It allows users to share their tasks with other members of their team or organization and to get updates via email when a task has been completed. Google Tasks is available on several devices including mobile phones and tablets. Tasks can also be added automatically from Gmail or Google Calendar.
In August 2013, GitLab announced that it would integrate with Google Tasks. This integration allowed users to create new issues in GitLab projects and attach them to tasks in Google Tasks. Users were able to see the status of their issue in both tops simultaneously. This integration was created using the Google Task API and OAuth2. Users could choose whether to enable this integration for only a specific project or for every project they owned. Fplowing this announcement, several other similar services also integrated with Google Tasks. For example, Evernote released a plugin that would allow users to connect their Google Tasks account with Evernote.
Integration with Google Tasks helps spve the issue of synchronization between two different systems. However, this integration has resulted in some disadvantages as well. Some users do not want to use Google Tasks because it is owned by Google and so are wary about entering personal information into it. In addition, because these services are not completely integrated with each other, there is always a chance for data loss. When one service is updated, changes might not be reflected in another service for a short period of time due to possible lags in the synchronization process.
The benefit of integrating GitLab and Google Tasks is that users can now manage all aspects of their projects in one place. With integration with Google Tasks, users can add tasks to issues directly from Google Tasks, which results in increased productivity and less confusion about what needs to be done next. Also, this integration makes it easier for users to access their projects through multiple devices because they can access it from anywhere as long as they have an internet connection. Users can also feel more organized because they have one place where they can find all their projects and tasks. This integration also helps users become more productive because they don’t need to switch between multiple applications to access all their information about each project.
