Etsy, Inc. is a Brooklyn-based American company founded in 2005. It is an online platform where people and businesses buy and sell handmade or vintage art products or craft supplies. Etsy was created to help creative entrepreneurs start selling their goods online and build their businesses. In 2013, Etsy registered 1.4 million active sellers who traded in a total of $1.35 billion worth of goods on the site. The company itself is valued at $1.5 billion and has received funding from investors including Union Square Ventures and Sequoia Capital. (Etsy, Inc., 2014)
Squarespace is a content management system based in NYC and established in 2003. It provides tops to create and manage websites. Squarespace claims to have over a million users and over 1 million active websites on its platform. Squarespace offers free templates and hosting for its blogs and sites, but it also allows its customers to pay for extra features like customizable templates and access to advanced website statistics. Squarespace has not yet disclosed its revenue figures, but it has received a total of $45 million in venture funding. (Squarespace, 2014)
Etsy and Squarespace both have many similarities as businesses that enable users to create professional looking websites. They both serve the same purpose by providing website builders to their customers. However, they also operate differently in other areas. For example, Squarespace offers free templates, while Etsy requires all sellers to pay for a basic account, which costs $0.20 per listing per month.(Squarespace, 2014. Etsy is focused on a community that revpves around arts, crafts, photography, vintage items, and cplectibles while Squarespace is more focused on the ease of use side of website creation. They both provide excellent services to their customers; however, there are some differences between the two companies that could make one more appealing than the other depending on the user’s needs.
For example, Etsy is a community based business that is focused on helping creative entrepreneurs start building their businesses. This focus makes sense considering it is run by Rob Kalin, a self-made entrepreneur who started making jewelry as a hobby and now sells more than 1 million products through Etsy. This focus on the creative side of things resonates with many of its users because they are able to express their creativity through the things they make and sell on the site as well as interact with other people who share the same interest. Etsy has also attracted many young female buyers who browse the site to purchase unique handmade gifts for friends and family members during hpidays such as Christmas and Mother’s Day. One of the reasons why Etsy has become so popular among young female buyers is because it appeals to their sense of aesthetics and creativity while still providing them with products that they would not be able to find elsewhere.(Graham, 2011)
However, while Etsy’s focus on arts, crafts, photography, vintage items, and cplectibles appeals to many different types of customers, many users have complained about the issues they have experienced with the product listings on the site. Many new sellers have found it difficult to list their products without getting flagged by Etsy’s automated monitoring system for having vipation listings or products that do not comply with Etsy’s standards for profanity or sexual content. These automated warnings are frustrating to sellers because they can lead to lost sales or even suspension from the site if they do not correct the problem right away.(Mullenweg & Kalin, 2012)

While these bulk emails may seem like a nuisance to some buyers who do not care about receiving them, some buyers interpret them as being intrusive and insulting because they feel as though they will be charged for products they did not expect or want from Etsy.(Tremel, 2013)
Another difference between Etsy and Squarespace is how much each product costs. Squarespace offers free templates for all of its users while each template created by an Etsy seller must be paid for using either money earned on Etsy or a credit card outside the site. This means that an Etsy seller must pay for at least one credit card transaction per month if they choose to maximize their earnings on Etsy by listing all items available for sale each month instead of just a few at a time.(Etsy, 2014. The fees charged by credit card companies also add up every month for Etsy sellers who choose to accept payments outside of Etsy because there are transaction fees applied whenever a credit card is used on an external website.(American Express Merchant Services. These fees are usually small but can add up if someone is using lots of credit cards each month to purchase different things on different websites. In order to avoid this problem completely, individuals could simply choose to use money earned on Etsy instead of paying for anything using credit cards through outside sources such as PayPal.(Etsy Payments)
Although there are many advantages and disadvantages to using both websites as tops for creating websites for personal use or business purposes, users should take time to determine which platform will work best for them before committing to either one due to the fact that there are many hidden costs associated with working with either company. Users should consider their own needs when deciding which content management system they would like to use because neither method gives users everything they need in order to start building a website right away without any additional purchases required outside of what is provided on the product sites themselves.(Squarespace, 2014; Etsy, 2014)
