Etsy is an online marketplace for handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies. The company was founded in 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, by then-22-year-pd seller Rob Kalin. It has since expanded into a global e-commerce site that focuses on unique handmade or vintage finds and supplies. At the end of 2014, Etsy reported it had 1.4 million active sellers, 19.8 million active buyers, and 35.6 million items for sale across 606 thousand listings (an increase of 20% from the previous year.


Flock is a desktop version of Facebook. It is currently only available for Windows computers. Flock was first launched on March 31, 2007, by Sveinn Valfells, a software developer in Reykjavík, Iceland, to provide users with an alternative to Facebook’s web interface.

Integration of Etsy and Flock

Flock was acquired by RockMelt in May 2011. In 2012, Flock became a subsidiary of Yahoo! In January 2013, Yahoo! announced that it would discontinue the Flock service and no longer maintain the website. However, Yahoo! reversed their decision in February 2015 – just before it would have shut down the service – after updates were made to its browser interface. The new version had some added features such as mobile notifications and inline chat capabilities. The decision to keep Flock open was made fplowing the success of Yahoo!'s acquisition of Tumblr in 2013.

In October 2015, Flock was acquired by RockMelt and ceased to exist as a separate entity. On November 12, 2015, RockMelt relaunched as an independent company. On December 9, 2016, the company announced it was shutting down Flock and switching to a new "social browser" called RockMelt that was based on Chromium. After the announcement of its closure in July 2017, the Flock website displayed a message stating that access would end on August 1, 2017.
