Etsy is an online marketplace for handmade goods and craft supplies. It was founded in Brooklyn in 2005 by Rob Kalin, who started the company with a personal investment of $20,000. By 2015, Etsy had grown to 85 million users, and it’s now valued at $1.8 billion. In addition to its own website, Etsy offers sellers a platform to sell on other sites like eBay, Facebook, Pinterest, and its mobile app. According to Forbes Magazine, Etsy is the world’s most popular marketplace for buyers of unique goods and vintage items (“About”.
Delay by Connect is the largest crowd-funding platform in Japan with over 5 million funding projects from more than 3 million backers and a total amount of over 500 billion yen raised. Delay by Connect also helps Japanese entrepreneurs to expand into overseas markets, connecting them with foreign customers and partners. Crowd-funding has become a new way of raising funds. It is used as a means of raising funds for individuals and businesses that don’t have access to bank loans or maybe don’t want to go through the hassle of going through banks just to get their project off the ground. The idea behind it is that if a person wants to start a business or project and needs money to get it started then they can set up a page on the Delay by Connect website and ask people to donate money in exchange for some kind of reward (which can be anything from a free product to a percentage of profits. Crowd-funding has been proven to be successful in many areas around the world and is quickly growing every day. It has been very effective in Japan as well and can be helpful for many entrepreneurs who have great ideas but are lacking the funds to launch their idea into the real world. Delay by Connect was created because there were a lot of people in Japan who didn’t have the opportunity or knowledge to use other crowd-funding platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo so Delay by Connect began as an opportunity for those people. Delay by Connect allows people who don’t have the means to set up an account on these other websites to still get their business or project funded (Matsumoto. This is beneficial to many people especially in Japan where there are many people who don’t know how to set up accounts with these platforms because they don’t have the knowledge or they don’t have any money to invest in it. Delay by Connect is also beneficial because you can keep your costs low as well as your risk. You don’t have to worry about having things shipped back or dealing with refunds because if you don’t meet your goal you don’t have any money that you need to return so you are able to keep all of your money. If you do meet your goal then you will be able to finally start your project and reach your goals without having any hiccups along the way (Matsumoto.
Both Etsy and Delay by connect are two great examples of companies that are doing well with their mission statements which is “Etsy is focused on making our mission possible by creating the conditions that enable artisans to make a living doing what they love” (Etsy, Inc. while Delay by connect says they are “Focused on helping creators succeed in the global marketplace” (Delay by Connect. Both of these companies are similar in that they help others achieve their goals but also give back at the same time which is great for those invpved in either company. Before I talk about the integration between the two companies, I would like to discuss both companies separately and explain how each works and what they do for their customers.
In order for me to fully understand how Delay by Connect works I decided to visit their homepage which can be found here. https://delaybyconnect.com/ and read through their introduction page which answered some questions about the company (https://delaybyconnect.com/about/introduction/. From this page I was able to find out some facts about the company including; what it is, how it came about, what they do, and how users can support them. In order for me to fully understand how this site works I decided to create my own project on their website so I could see how it worked first hand (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS. After doing this I was able to see how easy it was for me to create a project page on this site as well as how easy it was for me to add pictures, videos, and other content related to my project on there. Although this was an easy process it did take some time before I got everything placed in the right spot but once I figured it out I was able to create a great looking page within no time at all. When creating my project I had to answer questions about my project but one thing that really stood out to me was that I was asked questions about my target audience which helped me figure out who would be interested in my project; this was something that really helped me narrow down exactly what I needed and made it easier for me when setting up my campaign. After I had completed all of this I moved onto setting up my rewards which were pretty easy because they already had premade categories including physical products, digital products, services and donations so I just selected what matched my needs best. This part was also very easy because after answering questions about what you are offering they provide you with choices for rewards and all you have to do is choose which one fits your needs best (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#rewards. It is important that when choosing rewards that you offer something that people would actually want because if they do not want it then they will not donate money towards your cause; this happened for me when I chose physical products as my rewards because all of them required shipping which meant that they would have taken time away from working on my project so in turn no one chose any of those rewards (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#rewards. After I had finished setting up my rewards I moved onto the next step which was promoting my project; this was important because you needed people donating money towards your cause if you wanted your project to succeed so I used several different methods including social media, press releases, emailing friends, family and coworkers asking them to share my project with others, posting flyers around town etc (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#promote. Some other things that happened during this process included being able to see how much money had been donated towards my cause as well as seeing how many people had viewed my project page (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#stats. One thing that was also very useful was being able to create alerts so you could keep track of when certain things happened such as when someone donated or shared your project with friends etc (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#set-up-alerts. Overall creating this project was very easy and beneficial since they provided me with a lot of information and help along the way so I could make sure that everything went smoothly.
After creating my project it allowed me to see how many people had viewed my project as well as how many people had donated towards it and from this being able to see how much money had been raised which helped me determine whether or not I wanted to continue working on my project or if I wanted to end it early (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#view-stats. After reviewing this information I decided that even though only 2 people had donated towards it I still wanted to continue working on my project because I thought there was potential for more people to donate and help me raise more money since there were still 23 days left on my deadline (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#view-stats. As time went on more people began donating towards my cause eventually giving me enough money so that I could actually start production on my product which made me very happy but it also made me realize just how important it is that you choose rewards wisely because if you don’t offer something appealing enough then no one will want to donate towards your cause (https://delaybyconnect.com/project/1aeIkLqR4cS#view-
