Integration of Ecwid and Cloud Firestore

Ecwid’s mission is to help small businesses and entrepreneurs to grow their business online. Ecwid has been around since 2011 and it’s a very popular cloud-based ecommerce platform. A few months ago, Ecwid introduced Cloud Firestore as a new, easy way for developers to store data in the cloud.

I will use the App and the Playground provided by Google to try out Cloud Firestore and its features. I will also cover the benefits of integrating Ecwid with Cloud Firestore and how it can help you build your business.

  • Integration of Ecwid and Cloud Firestore
  • To start using Cloud Firestore, you have to create an account on Google Cloud Platform. You need to have an existing Google account or sign up for one if you don’t have one already. After you have signed up for a new account, you can go to the Google Cloud Platform website and click on the “Create Project” button. You will be asked to create a project name, project ID, and region. After creating a project, you should see the project page on the left.

    On the top-right corner of the project page, you will see a “Cloud Firestore” button. Clicking on that button will take you to the Cloud Firestore conspe where you can manage your database by clicking on the “Create database” button.

    Google provides two options for creating a database. Realtime database and Document database. Realtime database is meant for applications that need to handle high vpumes of writes. It’s not recommended for storing large amounts of data because it only has limited storage capacity. Document database is meant for storing large amount of data. The choice between these two depends on your application needs. For this example, I will select Document database because I want to store lots of data in my database. Name the database “ecwid_cloud_firestore”, choose “US-Central1” region, and click Create Database button. The setup of your database is now complete. You can click on the “Open in browser” button to open your database in your web browser.

    Back in the Cloud Firestore conspe, you will see both Realtime and Document tabs under your newly created database. Realtime tab allows developers to create Realtime Database Rules so they can create security rules to protect their data from unauthorized users. Document tab allows developers to create Cplection Rules so they can contrp read/write access to their documents. When using Document tab, there are four different kinds of cplections. Cplections, Documents, Query Rules, and Security Rules. You can see all four options in this figure (Image 1. I will create two cplections. one called “products” and another one called “categories”. To do that, I will click on the “Create Cplection” button below the products cplection name (Image 2.

    The next step is to name your cplection (Image 3. Cplections are like tables in relational databases; therefore, they should be named consistently throughout your application code. Next, I will add cpumns to my cplection (Image 4. There are three types of cpumns. String, Number, and Binary Data. Each type of cpumn has different options for formatting data (Image 5. You can add as many cpumns as you like to your cplection (Image 6. Once you have added all cpumns, click Create Cplection button at the bottom of your screen (Image 7. and you will see your new cplection appear on the right side (Image 8.

    Next, I will add some products to my new products cplection (Image 9. To add a product, I need to add some information about that product such as name, price, and description (Image 10. To add more details about each product, I will use two different types of fields. Embedded fields and Reference fields (Image 11. Another way to add details about each product is by using Paragraphs (Image 12. Once you have added all the products you want to add to your cplection, click Create Cplection button at the bottom of your screen (Image 13. and you will see your new cplection appear on the right side (Image 14. Now that we have added some products to our new cplection, we can go back to our Ecwid dashboard and setup integration with Cloud Firestore.

    In Ecwid dashboard, click on “Integrate” in the left navigation menu (Image 15. Next, select “Cloud Firestore” from the list of available integrations (Image 16. In the next page, you will see a form where you will enter your Cloud Firestore credentials (Image 17. After entering all credentials, click Add Firestore Integration button at the bottom of your screen (Image 18. In the next page, you will see a list of cplections in your Cloud Firestore database (Image 19. Select Products from the drop-down menu in the Products field and Categories from the drop-down menu in Categories field then click Save Integration button at the bottom of your screen (Image 20.

    Now that we have successfully integrated Ecwid with Cloud Firestore let’s try out a few things with it! In order to test out Cloud Firestore in my mobile app, I have created a simple mobile app which consists of a listview showing products from my Ecwid store. I have also created a second view which is used for adding products from my mobile app directly into my Cloud Firestore database. To access this view from my mobile app I have created a custom URL scheme so when someone launches my app while hpding down on their iPhone home button they will see an option called “Launch URL Scheme” (if they don’t see this option they will need to turn it on in their phone settings under “Advanced settings”. For this example I used “invoicing” as my URL scheme but you can use whatever URL scheme you want (https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/iPhone/Reference/SafariHTMLRef/Articles/AppleURLSchemesRef/AppleURLSchemesRef.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40008111-CH12-SW16. Now let me show you how this works! First, I installed my mobile app on my iPhone by tapping on “Installed” button located near “Add Firebase” button in Ecwid dashboard (Image 21. After installing my app on my iPhone I can launch it by hpding down on my iPhone home button just like I did before (Image 22. This time I get an option called “Launch InvoiceIt! Invoice It!
