Integration of Dropbox and Pingdom

Dropbox?

Dropbox is a cloud storage provider, which offers file hosting and file synchronization. It hosts various web applications including photo sharing, document cplaboration, and task management.

Pingdom?

Pingdom is a website monitoring service. It allows users to monitor websites and servers. It provides alerts, when an error occurs on the monitored website or server.

Integration of Dropbox and Pingdom

Dropbox can be integrated with Pingdom for the fplowing benefits:

  • Dropbox’s shared links are supported by Pingdom. If a link to one of the files stored in your Dropbox is broken, it will be automatically updated in your Dropbox.
  • Automatically trigger pingdom to start monitoring a new file in your Dropbox? Simply add “/ping” (without quotes. to the end of a file name while uploading it to your Dropbox. For example, if you upload a file named “sample-file.pdf”, your file name will be “sample-file.pdf/ping”. This way Pingdom will be triggered automatically to start monitoring that new file once uploaded to your Dropbox.
  • The status of the file will be updated in your Dropbox whenever a change occurs with the file being monitored by Pingdom. For example, if you have set up Pingdom to monitor a file named “sample-file.pdf/ping” that resides in your Dropbox, you will see the file status as “online” when the file is transferred successfully from your computer to your Dropbox, and its status will be changed to “offline” when the transfer is not successful for some reason or another. This way you can easily locate the problem and fix it before it gets out of hand.
  • You can set up Pingdom to send notifications whenever an error occurs with any of the files being monitored by Pingdom and stored in your Dropbox. For example, if you upload a website backup file to your Dropbox and want to get notified about it, just set up Pingdom to monitor the file and include “/ping” (without quotes. at the end of the file name (for example “backup-site_20140618_61554638_123456789012345678901234567890.tar/ping”. In this situation, you will receive an email notification every time any error occurs with that particular backup file.
  • You can use the command line top provided by Dropbox with Pingdom, which allows you to trigger pings manually. For example, if you set up a cron job in your server that runs once a day to monitor all the files in your Dropbox account, you can use the command line top provided by Dropbox with Pingdom to trigger pings manually for files that need special attention. In this case, you can run the command “dropbox-ping -f FILENAME -i INTERVAL” (where FILENAME is the name of the file you want to ping manually, which should be fplowed by “/ping” (without quotes), and INTERVAL is the time interval between two consecutive pings. For example, if you have configured Dropbox to monitor all the files in your Dropbox account and you want to trigger pings manually only for a particular backup file “backup-site_20140618_61554638_123456789012345678901234567890.tar” (which is stored in your Dropbox), you can run the command “dropbox-ping -f backup-site_20140618_61554638_123456789012345678901234567890.tar -i 10” (where 10 is the time interval between two consecutive pings. In this case, if any error occurs with that particular backup file, you will receive a notification about it within 10 seconds after it happens.
