Dropbox is an American commercial company that provides cloud services for storing, hosting, sharing, and synchronizing data. The company was founded in 2007 by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowski, both of whom were former employees of the file-sharing service Hotmail. It has received several rounds of venture funding from Sequoia Capital, Accel Partners, and others, and is backed by the venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and Founders Fund. Dropbox uses a freemium business model, where users are offered a free account with a set storage size, which can be upgraded to a paid account with more capacity. The company also offers Dropbox for Teams, Small Business, and Enterprise plans for teams requiring more than 1 TB of storage. In 2014, Dropbox announced its acquisition of Mailbox, a popular email app, and Carousel, another photo-sharing app.

In June 2012, hackers stpe several gigabytes of data from Dropbox’s servers. Shortly after this, Dropbox responded by updated its service agreement to include language that said the company can “disclose [users’] information to law enforcement agencies or government officials” whenever it receives a subpoena or court order. This language has been criticized by some users.

In April 2013, Dropbox acquired TapEngage, a startup that created mobile marketing tops for businesses.
