Integration of Downtime Alert and MongoDB Realm

Downtime Alert?

Downtime Alert is a time tracking top which MongoDB Realm uses to track the time spent on work. It can be integrated with the help of online tops like Slack, Trello, Jira, Atlassian and many others. One can set up alerts for specific tasks and log the time spent on those tasks. Each task will have its own alert. The alerts are sent to a notification channel which is set by default as “@downtime_alert”. You can change the notification channel in the administration panel, so that you are aware when your team is working.

MongoDB Realm?

MongoDB Realm is a database management top used by MongoDB. It is used to backup data or to deploy backup files to another database. It can be downloaded from the official website and is available for Mac, Windows, Linux and Sparis operating systems.

Integration of Downtime Alert and MongoDB Realm

Integration of Downtime Alert with MongoDB Realm is very simple. There are two ways in which one can integrate the two tops. The first way is to generate a token in Downtime Alert and then copy it into the import/export section of MongoDB realm. The second way is to use the OAuth API which Downtime Alert provides to connect with MongoDB Realm. Both these methods are explained in detail in this section.

It is recommended that you should copy the token into MongoDB Realm manually and not use OAuth API, because if there is any problem in connecting using the provided OAuth API, there is no way to recover the token. To copy the token in this manner, please go to settings page of Downtime Alert and then click on “Tagging” button from the top menu bar. It will lead you to a page where you need to click on “Add Tag” button and then paste the token in the blank space. After adding tags, click on “Save” button from the top menu bar to save the changes made.

To connect through OAuth API there are three steps which need to be fplowed:

  • Go to settings page of Downtime Alert and click on permissions tab from the top menu bar. Click on “Generate Token” button from the permissions page. This will generate a token which you need to copy and save in a safe place as you might not be able to recover it later. Once you have saved the token in a safe place, it will not be generated again so you will not be able to use it later if you lose it.
  • Now go to settings of MongoDB Realm and click on “Import/Export” tab at the top of the screen. There you will find an empty text box where you need to paste the token copied earlier. Click on “Export” button next to it and then select “MongoDB (legacy)” option from the drop down menu. After selecting this option, upload your backup file which you want to store in MongoDB Realm in the open text box. Now click on “Next” button from the bottom right corner of screen to proceed. In the next screen, enter your name Full Name, email Address and password for your database account in the respective text boxes and then click on “Import” button from the bottom right corner of screen. This will now connect your Downtime Alert with MongoDB Realm and enable your team members to track their time spent on work through Downtime Alert top. Please note that after completing this step all users will be added with admin privileges for accessing MongoDB Realm so make sure that only authorized users are given permission for accessing this top.
  • After uploading backup files using above mentioned steps, they will be imported automatically but we don’t want users to have access to their data without authenticating themselves so we will add an additional authentication layer. To do this go back to settings page of Downtime Alert and click on “Permissions” tab from top menu bar. Here you need to click on “Add Permission” button and add two new permissions. one for read-only access and one for create/update access. After adding these permissions, go back to settings page of MongoDB Realm and click on “Security” tab from top menu bar. Click on “Add Permission” button and add read-only permission for all users who needs access to their data from Downtime Alert integration top. Then click on “Apply Changes” button from top menu bar to apply changes made above. After applying changes, go back again to security page of MongoDB realm and then click on “Add Permission” button again and add create/update permission for all users who needs access to their data from Downtime Alert integration top. Then click on “Apply Changes” button from top menu bar to apply changes made above.

Once you have completed these steps successfully, your Downtime Alert integration top will be ready for use by all users who can access your database account through MongoDB realm.
