Integration of Downtime Alert and ClickSend SMS

Downtime Alert. Downtime Alert is a monitoring and alert system that provides early notifications of changes to your critical web services. It also sends you alerts via SMS, push notifications, and email, as well as provides an API for real-time integration into other systems.

ClickSend SMS. ClickSend SMS is a web service that enables you to send text messages via email. They are able to connect your existing email account with their service so you can have a single point of contact for all of your text messaging needs.

  • Integration of Downtime Alert and ClickSend SMS:
  • Before integrating Downtime Alert and ClickSend SMS, we need to create two accounts for each system.
  • (1. Sign up for a Downtime Alert account at https://www.downtimealert.com/signup.

    (2. Sign up for a ClickSend SMS account at https://www.clicksendsms.com/signup.

  • After creating two accounts, we need to add the domains to our individual accounts.
    • In Downtime Alert, click on “Domain Settings” and enter the domain name you want to monitor. After entering the domain name, you will be asked to provide the DNS details for your domain. Enter the DNS details provided and then click “Save Changes”. After this step, you may create alerts and choose whether or not you want to receive them by email or SMS (or both. You may also view reports and graphs showing the historical uptime of your site.
    • In ClickSend SMS, click on “SMS Domains” button in the upper menu bar and enter the domain name you want to monitor. The domain name you are entering should be exactly the same as what you entered into Downtime Alert before. If not, your message won’t be delivered successfully. Click on “Add Domain” after adding the domain name. After adding the domain name, you may choose which carrier you want to send the message through and generate a short code for this domain (short code is usually four or five digits. After generating a short code, you may see the short code in the fplowing form (e.g. xx22xxxxxx or xxxxxx222. Copy it and paste it into Downtime Alert so that you can use it later when setting up alerts. You may also view reports and graphs showing the historical uptime of your site.

  • After creating two accounts, we have to link them via API Key (it is much easier than we think!. For this purpose, we need to know how to get an API Key from Downtime Alert first. Go to http://www.downtimealert.com/domain/api and copy your API Key from here to use later!
  • Steps for Linking Downtime Alert and ClickSend SMS via API Key:

    • Go to https://www.downtimealert.com/signup and login with username and password that you created earlier. Then click on “API Key Settings” in the upper right hand corner of the dashboard page. After that, go to “API Keys” tab in the new window and click on “New API Key” button on the right hand side of “API Keys” title bar. Enter an appropriate name in the field below “Name” and then click on “Create API Key” button at the bottom of the page. The newly created API key will be shown on this page under “API Keys” title bar. Copy it for later use!
    • Next, go to https://www.clicksendsms.com/signup and login with username and password that you created earlier. Then click on “API Keys” button in the upper menu bar and enter the domain name that you added into ClickSend SMS earlier in this paragraph (the same domain name that you entered into Downtime Alert before. After entering the domain name, click on “Generate Short Code” button at the bottom of the page (you can click on it twice if necessary. An API Key will be shown on this page under “API Keys” title bar. Copy it for later use!
    • Open an internet browser (e.g., Chrome. and paste both API Keys into fplowing boxes respectively (“API Key 1” field is for Downtime Alert API Key; “API Key 2” field is for ClickSend SMS API Key. https://www.downtimealert.com/api/upload_key/?api_key=xxxxxxxx (where xxxx is your API Key from Downtime Alert. and https://www.clicksendsms.com/api/login/?api_key=xxxxxxxxx&username=xxxxxxx (where xxxx is your API Key from ClickSend SMS. Now we have linked Downtime Alert and ClickSend SMS! We can start using this wonderful integration right away! Any change of DNS status will instantly trigger an alert via email or SMS!
