Integration of Downtime Alert and AWS IOT

Downtime Alert?

Amazon Downtime Alert (DTA. is an application that helps AWS users to identify potential failures in their systems and take appropriate actions. It detects downtime of a system by using latency-based detection algorithm. The system send requests to the infrastructure every N seconds and compare response time with previous requests. If there is an increase in the response time, it is considered as a failure which might be caused by network connectivity or other issues. Amazon DTA sends notifications about detected failures to its users via email or SMS.

Amazon DTA is integrated with AWS IOT which allows you to monitor your devices and has capability to manage your devices and contrp them through voice commands. Users can easily integrate devices like lights, appliances, sensors, and many more to Amazon DTA through AWS IOT. An example of such integration will be given in the next section.

AWS IOT?

AWS IoT is a service offered by Amazon Web Services that enables users to connect and manage IoT devices. It is used for monitoring your devices and sending notifications if any device disconnects from your backend server. There are two ways of integrating an IoT device with Amazon IOT, one is MQTT and other one is HTTPS.

Integration of Downtime Alert and AWS IOT

Fplow the below steps to integrate Amazon DTA and AWS IOT:

Step 1. Register for AWS IOT. https://aws.amazon.com/iot/register/

Step 2. Create AWS IOT MQTT client id, this can be done from your AWS IOT dashboard on the left hand side menu, click on “IoT –> MQTT” under services section and then click on “Create a MQTT Client” button as shown below:

Step 3. Once you have created an MQTT client, you will get its details on the right hand side of the screen. Copy the Connection ARN so that you can use it later while configuring Amazon DTA for connections configuration.

Step 4. Create an account on Amazon DTA and then log in to it. If you don’t have an account, create one now. https://aws.amazon.com/downtimealert/home/index#/login

Step 5. Now go to “Settings” tab and select “Connections” option from the left hand side menu and click on Add Connection button as shown below:

Step 6. You will get a pop up message asking you for details of the connection type for Amazon DTA, choose MQTT as shown below:

Step 7. Configure the details according to your needs. Connection Type = MQTT, Host Name = DNS name or IP address of your AWS IOT MQTT endpoint. Username= API Key assigned to your AWS IOT MQTT client id, Password = API key assigned to your AWS IOT MQTT client id, QOS = 0 (default value), Subscription Topic = Any topic you want to subscribe to(default value), keep this topic same as subscription topic of your AWS IOT MQTT client id otherwise you will receive notifications about all devices connected with your account. Click on Save button after filling up all required details. Your details will be saved and you can see it in your connections page as shown below:

Step 8. Now go back to the main page of Amazon DTA and click on “Downtime Alert” option in left hand side menu as shown below:
