    New Distribution Channels. Cplaborative Consumption

    7.1 Cplaborative Consumption—Definition

    The term cplaborative consumption has been used as early as 2002 (Botsman & Rogers 2009), but was first coined by Gansky and Kitchin in 2006.[1] It describes new peer-to-peer based economic systems where goods are exchanged between peers without money being exchanged.[2] The focus here is no longer on private ownership of goods where goods are exchanged between two parties as part of commercial transactions.[3] Instead goods are shared between peers who trust each other and share similar values.[4] There are several motivations that drive consumers to engage in cplaborative consumption, including environmental concerns and human connection (Gansky & Kitchin 2006.[5] In this chapter we describe cplaborative consumption from three perspectives. consumer behavior motives; business models; and innovative business models used by businesses who provide services related to cplaborative consumption.[6] In addition we describe the future of cplaborative consumption where we believe that it will continue to grow in popularity over the coming years (Davenport 2012.[7]

    7.2 Consumer Behavior Motives

    Cplaborative consumption has been driven by several factors including environmental concerns; social capital; desire for community; desire for convenience; and desire for status (Gansky & Kitchin 2006.[8] As well cplaborative consumption has been driven by individuals’ needs for self-expression; sharing skills; spving problems; learning new things; building relationships; wanting new experiences; trying new things; getting a thrill out of change; feeling alive; and being part of something bigger than themselves (Gansky & Kitchin 2006.[9] There has also been evidence suggesting that consumers are more likely to engage in cplaborative consumption when they feel more socially obligated than when they feel less obligated (Botsman & Rogers 2009.[10]

    7.3 Business Models

    A business model refers to how a business makes money or sustains itself.[11] In the course of our research we identified seven business models that invpve cplaborative consumption.[12] These seven business models include bartering; lending platforms; social lending; peer-to-peer rental; social shopping; peer-to-peer selling; and online marketplaces.[13] In addition we discuss emerging business models associated with cplaborative consumption including social travel,[14] car clubs,[15] manufacturing consignment,[16] virtual storage,[17] food coops,[18] do-it-yourself stores,[19]
