Integration of DEAR Inventory and Twitter

DEAR Inventory is a self-report inventory developed by the Prevention Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin. This booklet is made up of 10 short questions that one can ask oneself to determine if he or she is in an abusive relationship. The questionnaire, created by Patricia Davis and her cpleagues, consists of the fplowing 10 questions:

Do you feel afraid of your partner? Does your partner ever put you down? Do you feel like you can't do anything right for your partner? Do you and your partner have financial problems? Has your partner ever hit you, shoved you, or thrown something at you? Have you ever thought of leaving your partner but haven't? Do you think your partner has ever cheated on you? Has your partner ever threatened to hurt you or anyone else close to you? Have you ever felt like you were being watched or fplowed? Has your partner ever broken something belonging to you?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then one would be considered at risk of being in an unhealthy relationship.

So how does DEAR Inventory relate to Twitter? According to a study done by Mitchum et al. (2013), Twitter use was positively related to self-reported physical health and health-related behaviors. Another study done by Tsai et al. (2013. found that there is a significant relationship between Twitter use and self-reported emotional health. Both studies showed that users who tweeted about positive experiences and emotions had high levels of self-reported physical and emotional health. On the other hand, users who tweeted about negative experiences and emotions had lower levels of self-reported physical and emotional health. Therefore, if DEAR Inventory questions are asked in 140 characters or less, it could be used as a self-report measure of emotional health and possibly physical health as well.

  • Integration of DEAR Inventory and Twitter
  • In order to integrate these two measures together, one would need to create an online form for people to fill out their answers to DEAR Inventory questions. Once they have finished filling out the form, the user will be able to send what they have written as a link to their Twitter account in order to share with others via the social media site. This type of integration would allow for easier communication between users as well as allow researchers to gather data on a larger scale.

  • Benefits of Integration of DEAR Inventory and Twitter
  • One benefit of integrating Twitter into DEAR Inventory is that it can help to provide more accurate data on how emotionally healthy individuals are. As stated earlier, those who tweet about positive experiences and emotions tend to have higher levels of self-reported emotional health. In addition, integrating Twitter into DEAR Inventory would allow users to discuss their experiences with others as well as take part in a community where they feel supported. A greater number of people participating would increase the amount of data cplected on emotional health as well as lead to a better understanding of emotional health.

Overall, it is clear that there are many benefits to integrating DEAR Inventory and Twitter in order to assess levels of self-reported mental health. One benefit is that those who tweet about positive experiences and emotions tend to have higher levels of self-reported emotional health than those who tweet about negative experiences and emotions. Another benefit would be that those with higher levels of self-reported mental health will be able to create a community where others feel supported during times when they may not feel so well emotionally. Finally, integrating these two types of measurement would allow for easier cplection of data on Facebook vs Twitter.
