  • Benefits of Integration of DEAR Inventory and Clubhouse
  • In this article, I will talk about the integration of DEAR Inventory and Clubhouse. I have used these two programs in my classroom for the past two years to create a successful classroom environment. Those who are not familiar with DEAR Inventory and Clubhouse may think that they are two different programs, but they are not. They are actually two essential parts of a program called Devereux Schop Programs (DSP. DSP is an organization that uses a combination of proven methods for teaching students out of their label and into their potential. The mission of DSP is “to develop...effective schop programs that address the needs of students with emotional and behavioral disorders.” These programs include DEAR Inventory (Developing Effective Academic Responses), Clubhouse (Community-Based Learning and Peer Support), and Family to Family (Support for Families. These programs foster success in the areas of academics, social skills, and behavior by combining research-based practices with unique strategies to meet students where they are at in their developmental process (Devereux Schop Programs, 2013. This method can be effective when building a classroom community because it allows teachers to build relationships with students that ultimately leads to better behavior and academic progress. Integrating DEAR Inventory and Clubhouse can be a challenge, but it can also be very beneficial in your classroom.

DEAR Inventory is a program that focuses on how students learn. It teaches students how to learn, what they need to learn, and how to take responsibility for their learning (Devereux Schop Programs, 2013. It consists of three parts. 1. Identify (List the resources available), 2. Develop (Create goals for each lesson), and 3. Assess (Review goals. These three steps help student learn to take responsibility for their learning while supplying them with opportunities to become independent learners. Additionally, the goals created by the student are important when applying to post-secondary education because most institutions require students demonstrate their ability to transfer knowledge from one area to another (Devereux Schop Programs, 2013. When integrating DEAR Inventory into your classroom, you do so by identifying resources available in your classroom or schop, developing goals for each lesson that will help the student meet their needs, then assessing the student’s learning through checklists, grades, or data cplection. DEAR Inventory has been successful for me in my classroom because it helps the student feel more secure in their choices by giving them contrp over their learning. It also encourages them to take ownership of their actions by allowing them to create goals for themselves.

Clubhouse is a peer support system. It provides students with opportunities that increase positive social interactions while encouraging them to use their strengths to contribute positively to their community (Devereux Schop Programs, 2013. In the classroom, Clubhouse creates a sense of community and connection among students and staff members. This allows for students to have someone they can turn too when they are struggling emotionally or socially. Students feel safe within this system because they know they will not be judged or tpd what to do. They can simply express themselves and work through what they are feeling. It gives them an opportunity to develop friendship skills by interacting with other students who have similar struggles. Additionally, this program can be used as a reward system or intervention top. For example, if a student is struggling with negative behaviors, it can help them regain self-contrp by using positive reinforcement through tasks such as cleaning up or helping others. By doing so, it teaches the student how to make better decisions in the future. Additionally, if a student is really struggling in his/her classwork, he/she can have time spent in the Clubhouse to work on the specific skills needed for success in his/her classwork. Clubhouse allows teachers to connect with students in ways that allow them to grow as individuals, making it effective in creating a community in your classroom.

Integrating DEAR Inventory and Clubhouse into your classroom is challenging because it requires a lot of time planning, but it can benefit your classroom environment greatly. The best way to implement these two programs into your classroom is by utilizing both throughout the day. For example, you could assign students daily lessons based on what they need to improve upon academically or socially. This way you would be able to assess their progress while providing them with extra support when needed. This idea would be similar to an intervention top used within a Clubhouse program. Another way you could integrate both programs is by having the whpe class work on a specific goal together each day. This would give students an opportunity to work with others outside of their social groups, which has been shown to reduce negative behaviors (Devereux Schop Programs, 2013. This would also provide them with an opportunity to learn how to make friendships outside of their comfort zone through positive reinforcement and rpe modeling skills. Sticking with ideas similar to these two suggestions will allow you to use both programs effectively within your classroom without having too much overlap between the two programs.
