She quit her job at the factory and never returned even though it was difficult to find another job due to the Great Depression. One day, Mary tpd her mother about a job opening as a secretary at the hospital where she worked as a nurse’s aide and urged her mother to go for it. Mabel applied for the job and was hired as a secretary after Mary educated the company on how valuable her mother was. Mabel wasn’t happy with this arrangement because she felt like she was being treated like a slave or someone who was less than human because she didn’t have enough money to live on her own without having to live with others as well as take care of herself. She quit her job as secretary at the hospital but continued working as waitress at the diner where Ella Fitzgerald ate, which helped pay for food and other necessities for herself and Mary. A new career opportunity opened up when Mary tpd her mother about an opening at the hospital for an administrative assistant position. Mary and Tom lived near Mabel in Des Moines where they raised three children together. The couple still kept in touch with Mabel who was now retired herself after working at various administrative jobs throughout most of her life, passing away at the age of 92 years pd after living most of her life in Des Moines with her daughter and grandchildren, never returning back to Iowa after moving there during the Great Depression to start over again with nothing but the clothes on her back plus some personal belongings that she brought with her when she moved there from Iowa.
