Firebase is an application development platform for mobile, web and back-end applications. It provides an array of services for developers, including cloud storage, user management, analytics, authentication and hosting. Firebase was acquired by Google in 2014 and integrated into Google Cloud Platform (GCP. in 2015. By 2015, it had over 1 million developers using the platform.
MongoDB is an open source document database. It was developed by 10gen, founded in 2007 by MongoDB Inc. It started with NoSQL databases that focused on scalability and performance while also providing built-in indexes to provide fast access to the data.
Integration of Firebase Cloud Storage and MongoDB Realm
Firebase Cloud Storage is one of the many products of the Firebase suite. Firebase Cloud Storage is a simple object data storage spution designed for storing critical user data. Firebase Cloud Storage seamlessly synchronizes files across the devices of users. Firebase file storage has unlimited file size and can be accessed through both iOS and Android platforms.
Cloud Storage utilizes Google’s global network of edge servers for secure, high-speed transfers. Accessing your data is extremely secure as Firebase does not host any of its services on third party servers, instead opting to utilize Google’s own hardware infrastructure. This gives each service an advantage when it comes to speed, security and reliability.
The Cloud Firestore is the new version of the Firebase Realtime Database. The Cloud Firestore allows developers to create their own custom rules for how to store and query data, taking advantage of features like offline support, complex queries and authentication. Cloud Firestore retains all of the benefits of the Realtime Database, but adds features like offline support, complex queries and authentication that were previously only available in the server-side API.
Firebase’s ability to sync across devices makes it an excellent candidate to act as a data source for documents stored in MongoDB Realm. Since Realm is built on top of document databases like MongoDB or CouchDB, integrating Firebase Cloud Storage with MongoDB Realm would allow for easy synchronization of data across multiple devices without worrying about synchronization issues. The data being written into the Realm database could be providing by Firebase’s Firestore or any other real-time data source that Firebase supports. The data being read from the Realm database could be queried by any number of APIs supported by Firebase including Analytics, Authentication, Realtime Database or Hosting. Because Firestore has offline support by default, this would allow for synced data to be available even when no internet connection is available.
Benefits of Integration of Firebase Cloud Storage and MongoDB Realm
Cloud Storage’s ability to synchronize data across devices makes it a great candidate for use as a backend for MongoDB Realm, especially if that data needs to be synchronized across multiple devices without worrying about synchronization issues. The Cloud Storage API’s are very similar to those used by SQLite which many developers are familiar with if they have ever used any database before. This would make it easier for developers using Realm to understand how to store their own data in Cloud Storage if they are not already familiar with the service. Sync over HTTP is generally faster than Sync over Bluetooth LE because there is less overhead invpved in communication between devices. Since Firestore’s offline support is enabled by default, this would allow for synchronized data to be available even when no internet connection is available.
