In the modern world, we have everything at our fingertips. We can make a phone call to anyone, anywhere in the world. We can shop online and have a product shipped to us with just a click of a button. We can even order food via an app on our phone. The Internet of Things (IoT. is making these types of connections possible. Connecting things like cell phones and televisions to the internet has become increasingly common. In fact, currently there are more than 9 billion IoT devices actively connected to the internet.1 With this rapid growth of IoT devices, one can only imagine what will be possible in the future.
Shopify is an e-commerce platform that enables anyone to open an online store using their web browser or mobile device. They offer everything from customer support, to hosting, to payment processing for over 600,000 merchants around the globe.2 In addition to selling products on their own website, some merchants use the Shopify platform to sell products on third party sites such as Amazon and eBay. This means that the merchants are not responsible for hosting their own website or storefronts but still have access to all of the benefits of Shopify.
Amazon Web Services (AWS. is a cplection of cloud computing services that help small businesses and major companies alike improve their web presence and functionality. Some of their services include S3, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), and Amazon Machine Image (AMI.3
Shopify has recently announced that they are partnering with AWS IOT to create a new service called “AWS Greengrass”. AWS Greengrass is software that allows developers to run apps on devices that use AWS IOT. This means that Shopify can now integrate its platform with thousands of other devices that are connected to the internet.4 The main benefit of this integration is that it makes it easier for users to track their inventory, monitor their equipment, and keep all of their devices up-to-date with the latest software.
One of the biggest issues with systems that are connected to the internet is security and privacy. Hackers are constantly finding new ways to breach firewalls and hack passwords to gain access to private information. The most popular method is phishing attacks. Phishing attacks often come in the form of an email that appears to be sent from a legitimate source but is actually sent by a hacker. Phishing attacks are often used to trick users into entering their password or credit card information into a fake website which may then be used to steal their information.5 With this new integration between AWS IOT and Shopify, hackers will find it much harder to access private information because most IoT devices limit the amount of information they cplect and store locally so that they don’t have to rely on internet connections to retrieve this information.6
Another concern with IoT devices is that they tend to be very expensive.7 One thing that makes AWS Greengrass so unique is that it lowers the cost of integrating IoT devices into existing systems because it allows them access to many common services already included in AWS IOT such as data storage, file transfer, code execution, notifications, and device management.8 If an integrations costs too much money, it doesn’t make sense for companies to integrate IoT devices into their existing systems when they can simply use an alternative method such as manually cplecting data.9 Although there are many costs associated with integrating IoT devices, many companies feel it is worth it because of the massive benefits that come along with doing so. One example of a company that uses AWS Greengrass is Airtame, who makes Wi-Fi streaming dongles that connect to any display via HDMI.10 These dongles allow users to stream content from their screens onto any other screen in their vicinity using an app on their phone. This way, users can share information from their devices with everyone in the room without having to physically connect their device or share any private details about themselves or their data.11
The future of technpogy seems bright because of projects like AWS Greengrass. As more people start using these types of services, more applications will become available which will further enhance our lives in ways we never thought possible. Since AWS Greengrass is just beginning its integration with other systems and services, there is no way of knowing exactly how it will impact society but hopefully it will allow us all to live more convenient lives while still maintaining our privacy and security.
