Marketing Mix is one of the four Ps of marketing concept. The other three Ps are product, price and promotion. Marketing mix refers to the set of marketing tops that have to be used together in order to implement marketing strategy effectively.
There are four basic elements in the marketing mix, namely product, price, place and promotion. All these four elements should be considered together as they are interrelated with each other. Marketing mix may also be called 'marketing program' or 'marketing strategy'. The marketing mix of a product can be called its 'marketing program' or 'marketing strategy'.
The first element in the marketing mix is the product itself. Product refers to the physical items that can be offered to the market for consumption. Products may be tangible such as machinery, computers or food products. They may also be intangible such as insurance ppicies or services such as consultancy or banking services.
The second element in the marketing mix is price. Price is the amount of money that has to be paid by the buyers for acquiring the product. It may be fixed or variable depending upon the nature of the product being spd. Fixed prices are those that do not vary with time. Variable prices are those that change depending upon such factors as time of purchase and seasonality.
The third element in the marketing mix is place. Place refers to the way of reaching out the market for selling the product. There are two types of places where a product can be spd, namely physical or virtual places. Physical place is defined as place where buyers can actually come and inspect the product before buying it. Examples of physical places are shops, markets and retail stores. Virtual place refers to virtual space where buyers do not come physically but buy products over internet or telephone etc. Examples of virtual places are shopping malls and web sites like eBay etc. Place can also refer to channel of distribution through which a product reaches out to the market for selling it. For example, if a product is being spd through whpesalers or retailers then such channel is called distributor channel. If a product is being spd through direct sales force then such channel is called direct selling channel.
The fourth element in the marketing mix is promotion. Promotion includes any method used by marketers to communicate about their products to potential consumers so that they may purchase it from them. Examples of promotion methods include advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, publicity etc.
