Amazon Simple Queue Service or Amazon SQS for short is an internet service that provides a messaging queue. Messages are transmitted using web services. These messages belong to queues which can be accessed by multiple consumers. There are two options of adding new messages to the queue, either you can poll the queue periodically or you can use a HTTP request mechanism called as ‘Message API’. The process for polling a message from the queue is called as ‘consuming’ while process of sending a message to the queue is called as ‘producing’.
Amazon SQS has two main models for producing and consuming messages, these are:
Batch – When we produce many messages in one go and want them to be delivered at different times then we use Batch model. In this model, all the messages are grouped together in a single XML file. This file is sent to Amazon SQS. It is then stored in the queue. When the messages are ready to be delivered, Amazon SQS delivers them asynchronously.
Fire-and-Forget – As the name suggests, Fire-and-Forget model involves sending a message and not caring about it after that. This model is suitable when there is no response expected from the receiver. For example, if we send an email to someone then there is no need to know whether the email has been delivered or not. Hence Fire-and-Forget model is more suitable in such cases.
Amazon SQS provides us with two different models for sending and receiving messages, these are Batch and Fire-and-Forget models respectively. While Batch model is useful when we have to send many messages at once, Fire-and-Forget model is useful when we don’t care about the response from the receiver. We discussed both these models in detail with examples in this paper.
