A. What Is Amazon S3?Amazon S3 is a web service designed to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives developers access to reliable, affordable data storage through web services interfaces. Amazon S3 is easy to use, with a simple web service interface to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web.The most interesting thing for me is the unlimited storage. You can store as much as you want with unlimited bandwidth and no charge for the first 5GB (and in my case I have more than 50GB), which is very cost effective for startups like ours.Storage pricing is based on three different levels:Bucket Pricing – The price per GB of data stored in an Amazon S3 bucket, which can contain millions of objects. Storage pricing changes during the billing period only if your usage exceeds the highest estimated storage used over the past 12 months. If your estimated storage is consistently below the current tier during a calendar month, you will be charged for the lowest tier for that month.Storage Transfer Pricing – The price per GB to copy data into or out of Amazon S3. Data transfer charges are calculated separately from storage charges and apply whenever data is copied into or out of Amazon S3, regardless of how much data is copied or whether it's copied one time or one thousand times. There are two types of data transfer pricing. Standard pricing – For data transfer between Amazon S3 and the Internet, or another AWS Region. This option is always-on and you pay only for the egress data transferred from Amazon S3 Standard – For data transfer between Amazon S3 and AWS services other than the Internet or another AWS Region. This option allows you to use a different service to transfer your data to AWS instead of using the Internet. For example, if you're transferring data to a server running on AWS, the service transferring the data can be EC2 , Elastic MapReduce , or S3 Transfer Acceleration . This option is not always-on and you pay only for the egress data transferred from Amazon S3Storage Class Pricing – An optional additional feature for storing data in Amazon S3 that provides even lower prices when you need it, where you need it. Storage class pricing applies to all storage used by a customer and is independent of both the volume of data stored and the duration of storage. Storage class pricing can help save money by allowing customers to store their coldest data on the lowest priced storage class (that offers 128KB or less of data access per gigabyte per month. Cold data is data that is rarely accessed or accessed once every few months. This enables customers to save money on their storage costs without sacrificing performance.Standard Efficiency – Standard 128KB or less of access per gigabyte stored per month.Intelligent Tiering – Intelligent 256KB or less of access per gigabyte stored per month.Premium (One Zone. – Standard 128KB or less of access per gigabyte per month within a single Availability Zone.Premium (Multi-Zone. – Intelligent 256KB or less of access per gigabyte per month within a single Availability Zone or Standard 128KB or less of access per gigabyte per month between AZs within a region.
There are two ways you can integrate your Shopify store with Amazon S3:
1. Using a third party extension to connect your Shopify store with Amazon S3 directly using the Amazon S3 API . This way has many benefits but also many drawbacks including:a. It's expensiveb. It's complicated and takes technical expertise to implementc. You must manually upload product images to your Amazon S3 bucket and then update Shopify with new URLsd. High latency occurs when uploading large numbers of products at oncee. It takes up valuable resources during peak load times (the old "too many cooks in the kitchen" issue)2. Storenvy's Product Importer/ Exporter tool . This works very well but has some limitations such as:a. Only supports Shopify stores using HTML templatesb. You must add your products one by one through Storenvy's toolsc. It takes up valuable resources during peak load times (the old "too many cooks in the kitchen" issue)We've decided to go with Storenvy's Products Importer/ Exporter because it works seamlessly with Shopify stores using HTML templates and only takes up valuable resources during non-peak load times – when we don't have orders coming in. That said, if there are a lot of images that need to be uploaded/ downloaded, it can still take quite awhile depending on how many images are included in each product page. But overall I'm pretty satisfied with this solution.
You've probably heard about Amazon Web Services by now and you may be asking yourself, "What is this?" Well, in short, it's a set of remote computing services (also called web services. that make up an on-demand computing platform offered by Amazon.com. The services operate out of 11 geographical regions across the world. They make up several separate services including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon SimpleDB (which was recently closed down. These services are collectively referred to as Web Services Layer (WSL), and form an integral part of Amazon's retail business. At its core, AWS provides a robust, fully featured technology infrastructure stack that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in 190 countries around the world — all delivered over the Internet and paid for by usage, rather than rented space and bought infrastructure components… just as my good friend Brad Feld says . As a startup founder or CEO, you should consider leveraging these web services for your business because they can be extremely cost effective and they also provide great flexibility in terms of scalability, performance, and reliability which are vital components for businesses looking to grow quickly .
