    What is Amazon S3?

Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3. is an online storage service that provides developers and IT teams with cost-effective data storage and access to their data. S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, secure, fast, inexpensive infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of websites and apps. With S3, there are no upfront investments in hardware or software required, as there is with traditional storage systems. Developers pay only for the storage they use.

    What is Smartsheet?

Smartsheet is a cloud-based enterprise collaboration tool. Its features include task management, Gantt charts, calendars, dashboards and more. The tool allows users to collaborate on projects and tasks with other team members regardless of their location.

    Integration of Amazon S3 and Smartsheet

Amazon S3 can be integrated with Smartsheet through Smartsheet’s API. There are two ways to integrate Amazon S3 into Smartsheet. by using Google Chrome or by calling the Smartsheet API directly.

Integration via Google ChromeGoogle Chrome has an inbuilt extension called Google Sheets Add-on that allows one to import data from external sources into Google Sheets. This process involves copying a unique ID from the external source and pasting it in the extension window into a cell in the Google Sheets spreadsheet. The spreadsheet then automatically fetches all the information stored in the external source and imports it into the spreadsheet. In this case, the unique ID for Amazon S3 is “https://YOURACCOUNTSID.s3.amazonaws.com/” which needs to be copied into the Google Sheets Add-on window to fetch information from Amazon S3 into a Google Sheets spreadsheet. To access this window, go to File > Add-ons > Google Sheets Add-on > More Tools > Get External Data > Upload File to Google Drive. Once the information has been successfully imported from Amazon S3 into the spreadsheet, it can be accessed by anyone who has access to the spreadsheet.

Integration via Smartsheet APIIf integration via Google Chrome is not viable due to restriction of access by the owner of the spreadsheet or for any other reason, integration via Smartsheet API can be used instead. In this case, one needs to install Node JS on their system by following the instructions available at https:/odejs.org/en/download/. Once Node JS is installed on the system, create a new project by going to https:/odejs.org/en/docs/projects/intro-to-npm#package-manager-introduction followed by running npm init . This command prompts one to enter information about project details such as name and author name(s), which should be completed before pressing ‘Enter’. After this command is entered, one gets a package.json file displayed on their screen along with a few lines of text saved in the same folder as package.json . Now, install Smartsheet SDK by typing npm install smartsheet[aws] --save . This command will prompt one for permission when installing SDK before proceeding with installation. Once installation is complete, run npm start . This command opens up a new window that shows the response of the Smartsheet API request made by Node JS. The project code can be found at node_modules/smartsheet[aws]/lib/index.js . The code contains all the necessary information about accessing Amazon S3 via Smartsheet API and making use of it in a Node JS program.
