Integration of Amazon EC2 and Slack

    What is Amazon EC2?

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud or Amazon EC2 is a web service offered by Amazon Web Services. It provides a user with the capability to rent virtual machine instances that can be used for diverse purposes such as web servers, application servers, and database servers. These virtual machines are known as Amazon Machine Images or AMIs. An AMI is basically a virtual hard drive in the cloud which contains a precise operating system, software and configuration settings. These AMIs are created by Amazon or any third party vendor and can be downloaded from AWS Marketplace. AWS Marketplace is a marketplace provided by AWS where AMIs of various third party vendors can be downloaded and deployed. The user can also create his/her own AMI using Amazon Machine Image (AMI. Creator. This image can then be uploaded to AWS Marketplace for the use of other users. AMI creation is not only limited to Amazon's user's but it can also be used by third parties to create their own images and sell it through AMI Marketplace.

    What is Slack?

Slack is an instant messaging app for teams and businesses. It is designed for people who need to work together, communicate in real time, and stay connected on the go. It allows users to share documents, images, videos, etc. with their team members. A user can choose to make his/her team public so that other people can join their team without adding them as a friend or contact. In addition, Slack also provides its users with the option of creating a workspace that is accessible through a URL.Slack integrates with many other products and services and provides APIs so that developers can build integrations between Slack and other applications. Some of these integrations include integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Analytics, GitHub, Google Drive, Dropbox and Twitter among others.

    Integration of Amazon EC2 and Slack

Slack provides its users with the option of integrating their workspace with many services including Google Analytics, GitHub, etc. Similar to other services, Slack also provides an option of integrating with AWS EC2. Currently, the only AMI available for integration with Slack is the "ami-0f8c1d46", which is the latest Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr. 64 bit EBS-backed instance. Once the AMI is launched, it will create a public DNS entry that points to its public IP address. The user has to register this public IP address with Slack so that they can establish a connection between their workspace and AWS EC2.Once this registration process is complete, all messages posted publicly in slack are automatically posted on the workspace associated with the AMI in AWS EC2. Also, any messages posted in AWS EC2 are automatically posted publicly in Slack workspace. In addition to this, any file posted in AWS EC2 will be copied to the root directory of the workspace associated with the instance.Slack has integrated AWS EC2 and associated it with two workspaces. "slack-private" and "slack-public." Any message posted publicly in slack-private is posted privately on slack workspace associated with ami-0f8c1d46. Similarly any message posted publicly in slack-public is posted publicly on slack workspace associated with ami-0f8c1d46.
