Integration of Amazon EC2 and Instagram

  • Amazon EC2 is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is dynamic, enabling users to have access to computing resources on-demand. Amazon EC2’s simple pricing structure is based on two factors:
  • Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, share them either publicly or privately on the app, and follow other users’ feeds.
  • In this article I will be addressing how Instagram has utilized the services of Amazon EC2 for better performance and efficiency.

    What is Instagram?

  • Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, share them either publicly or privately on the app, and follow other users’ feeds.
  • A user can set up their own account by signing up with either their telephone number or a Facebook account.
  • The user can then browse other people’s photos and videos, either by the people who they follow or by hashtag searches.

Integration of Amazon EC2 and Instagram

  • When Instagram first launched in October 2010, it was written in Python and backed by MySQL databases. However, as the company grew (by May 2012 it had more than 30 million users. so did the difficulty of managing the database and supporting new users. The complexity led to outages and performance issues; at one point a single errant script took the site offline for half an hour.
  • In order to fix this problem, the company decided to move all data into Amazon S3 buckets, which are designed to store large amounts of data and distribute them over multiple servers. This allowed the system to be able to scale quickly without affecting performance.
  • As user numbers continued to grow, Instagram started having problems with handling image uploads and downloads from its S3 buckets. To fix these issues it switched to using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2. instances instead of standalone servers, which increased reliability and reduced costs after migrating from bare metal servers. The downside of using Amazon EC2 instances was that they were not specifically optimized for Instagram’s workload, and performance was significantly impacted.
  • Instagram’s most recent iteration of its architecture relies on another AWS service called ElastiCache, which is a hosted cache for web applications, such as Redis or Memcached. This change has significantly improved performance while reducing costs, and has enabled Instagram to handle more than one million new users every day since implementing the solution.

Benefits of Integration of Amazon EC2 and Instagram

1. Reduced costs:a.. By using Amazon EC2’s spot instance pricing model when demand exceeds availability of standard instance types (usually priced at a discount), Instagram was able to reduce prices by 20% while still maintaining the same level of service. There was no need to purchase additional hardware or otherwise maintain idle servers in anticipation of higher loads; when demand rose, the spot instances would be allocated automatically.b.. Similarly, by using ElastiCache instead of standalone servers Instagram has been able to reduce server count by 75%. This has reduced operating costs while also providing greater scalability.2. Increased reliability:a.. By using Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS. volumes instead of local storage for the database backups, Instagram was able to eliminate single points of failure from its system architecture. Using EBS volumes also eliminated issues related to moving databases between machines, since all instances could now read from the same EBS volume instead of each machine maintaining its own local copy of the database.b.. Similarly, by storing all images in S3 instead of on local servers there is no longer a single point of failure for image storage; if any single server fails there are hundreds of others that can take over seamlessly without any interruptions in service.

  • With integration of Amazon EC2 and Instagram, there are many benefits overall. cost savings, reliability enhancements, and performance gains. By optimizing the usage of AWS services such as Amazon EBS volumes, ElastiCache, and Amazon EC2 Spot instances for peak demand periods, Instagram has been able to not only save money but also improve reliability and responsiveness for its customers.
  • Acknowledging that you rely on a third party for your critical infrastructure is not straightforward — especially when that third party is as big as Amazon Web Services — but in this case it appears that Instagram made the right decision for its organization's needs given its current stage of growth and business objectives.
