Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2. is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change.EC2 provides users with control over the location of instances that run their code. Users can run their instances in the AWS US East (Northern Virginia. Region or in any one of the other supported Regions, including the EU (Ireland), US West (Oregon), US West (Northern California), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo. You can also create and run an instance in one of the available AWS GovCloud Regions, which are subject to the U.S. Government's CUI (Commercial Use Imports. restrictions.EC2 instances can be launched in either a public subnet or a private subnet. A public subnet is accessible to anyone on the Internet, while a private subnet can only be accessed by users who are granted access by the owner of the network. In addition to a private IP address, a private subnet is assigned an elastic IP address range that you can use to assign static IP addresses to instances within your subnet. Users who are granted access to a private subnet can also connect via SSH or VPN to a Linux/UNIX instance running in the subnet.EC2 provides users with control over the location of instances that run their code. Instance store volumes support Block Device Mapping (BDM. and Elastic Block Store (EBS), which provides persistent block level storage volumes that are independent from the life of an instance. Instance store volumes are available in General Purpose SSD ( gp2 ), Provisioned IOPS SSD ( io1 ), Throughput Optimized HDD ( st1 ), Cold HDD ( sc1 ), and Magnetic disk ( standard .A snapshot is a point-in-time copy of an EBS volume. Snapshots are created using EBS snapshots or by taking a copy of an Amazon EBS volume using a tool like rsync or UNIX commands. Once you have created a snapshot, you can launch an instance from it, mount it as an EBS volume, transfer data into it, or perform a variety of other operations with it. Snapshots are automatically deleted when they are no longer associated with an active instance and there are no pending changes to the volume. You pay only for the storage used by your snapshots. Snapshots do not count against your monthly storage limit and they are retained for up to 4 weeks after termination of the associated running instance unless explicitly deleted by you before then.A volume type defines the performance characteristics and availability options for an EBS volume. The following table lists the available volume types:Volume type Descriptionstandard Magnetic disk-based general purpose volumes that provide moderate I/O performance, excellent value, and magnetic disks that offer high durability through redundancy with RAID-0 across multiple disksio1 Provisioned IOPS SSD volumes that provide predictable high-performance I/O with low latencygp2 General Purpose SSD volumes that provide moderate I/O performance, excellent value, and solid state drives that offer high durability through redundancy with RAID-0 across multiple disksst1 Throughput Optimized HDD volumes that provide extremely high random I/O performance and throughput optimized for maximum performance. The st1 volume type uses SATA disks and offers three levels of performance. standard , cold , and premium . The cold disk option has lower performance but much lower price than the standard disk option, ideal if your workload does not require consistently high I/O throughput but your budget is constrained. The premium disk option delivers significantly higher performance than even standard disks; however, these disks cost significantly more than standard disks and premium disks are not recommended for workloads that do not require their performance capabilities.I. What is Downtime Alert?
Downtime Alert is a service provided by Amazon Web Services that monitors your applications running on Amazon EC2 for planned or unplanned downtime, notifies you via email when downtime occurs, and helps you diagnose issues that cause downtime. If you receive a notification about downtime from Downtime Alert, you can immediately narrow down potential causes of downtime by determining whether issues were caused by problems with your application code or issues with Amazon EC2's infrastructure itself by reviewing detailed information about each outage notification in Downtime Alert's history log report.I. Integration of Amazon EC2 and Downtime Alert:Downtime Alert can monitor any application running on Amazon EC2 based on any number of customizable criteria such as hostname, application name or specific Amazon EC2 Availability Zone. To configure Downtime Alert for monitoring your application, you first add it as a target for Downtime Alert's monitoring by specifying all relevant details about your application, such as its URL address or app ID. When adding your application as a target for Downtime Alert, you can specify whether your application should be monitored continuously or only during specified downtimes such as planned maintenance windows. Once you add your application as a target, Downtime Alert will begin monitoring it for failures and will notify you when failures occur based on your settings. Alternatively, if you already know about issues affecting your application due to its status message in Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS), you can configure Downtime Alert to monitor only specific Amazon SNS topics rather than all topics published by your application. With this method, you first define SNS topics to monitor using Downtime Alert's APIs or tools such as AWS SDKs; when issues affecting those SNS topics occur, Downtime Alert will notify you via email as well as log information about those events in its history log report so you can easily identify issues affecting your application and take steps to correct them. Examples of common issues affecting applications include service outages caused by unexpected changes in capacity utilization due to traffic surges at Amazon EC2 due to sudden popularity of your applications or service outages caused by problems with your applications themselves such as errors during application startup or database connections failing due to problems such as database connection timeouts or dropped connections due to low memory conditions on Amazon EC2 instances hosting your applications.
The process to integrate Amazon EC2 and Downtime Alert may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick solution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
