If you receive a notification about downtime from Downtime Alert, you can immediately narrow down potential causes of downtime by determining whether issues were caused by problems with your application code or issues with Amazon EC2's infrastructure itself by reviewing detailed information about each outage notification in Downtime Alert's history log report.I. Integration of Amazon EC2 and Downtime Alert:Downtime Alert can monitor any application running on Amazon EC2 based on any number of customizable criteria such as hostname, application name or specific Amazon EC2 Availability Zone. To configure Downtime Alert for monitoring your application, you first add it as a target for Downtime Alert's monitoring by specifying all relevant details about your application, such as its URL address or app ID. When adding your application as a target for Downtime Alert, you can specify whether your application should be monitored continuously or only during specified downtimes such as planned maintenance windows. Once you add your application as a target, Downtime Alert will begin monitoring it for failures and will notify you when failures occur based on your settings. Alternatively, if you already know about issues affecting your application due to its status message in Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS), you can configure Downtime Alert to monitor only specific Amazon SNS topics rather than all topics published by your application. With this method, you first define SNS topics to monitor using Downtime Alert's APIs or tools such as AWS SDKs; when issues affecting those SNS topics occur, Downtime Alert will notify you via email as well as log information about those events in its history log report so you can easily identify issues affecting your application and take steps to correct them. Examples of common issues affecting applications include service outages caused by unexpected changes in capacity utilization due to traffic surges at Amazon EC2 due to sudden popularity of your applications or service outages caused by problems with your applications themselves such as errors during application startup or database connections failing due to problems such as database connection timeouts or dropped connections due to low memory conditions on Amazon EC2 instances hosting your applications.
