You can send text message to any cell phone in the world from any computer with an Internet connection. It is ideal for one time messages, such as communicating with customers, employees and team members (SMS By Connect.

    One of the most important things when working with business is to make sure that you deliver the right message to the right person at the right time and in the right place. If you do not, you could potentially lose customers. In this example we will show how SMS By Connect can be integrated with Amazon DynamoDB to accomplish this goal.

    Integration of Amazon DynamoDB and SMS By Connect

    The integration between Amazon DynamoDB and SMS By Connect is done via an API call. The connection can be done in two different ways:

    • Create a table in Amazon DynamoDB and then associate a trigger with it. When a new record is inserted into the table, the trigger will automatically execute a create message command to send a text message to a number supplied by the user. This way, whenever a new record is inserted, a text message will be sent. This can be used for daily or weekly notifications. However, it requires that the user have an Amazon account which might not be convenient for all users. Also, it means that you have to remember to insert new records on a daily/weekly basis if you want to receive notifications on a certain day(s)/time(s.
    • With SMS By Connect you can set up a subscription by adding your phone number, your email address or both to a list of recipients for a particular notification event. For instance, if you would like to be notified when a new record is created in a certain table in Amazon DynamoDB, you can subscribe to the event "when a new item is added". You can even set it up so that you get a notification every time your favorite soccer team scores a goal! In this case, you would add your favorite soccer team's name to the table name in Amazon DynamoDB "team_name_goal" (e.g. Manchester United goal. When this event occurs, SMS By Connect will send you an email containing the full information about the score. So, if your team beat Chelsea 3-1 in the FA Cup final match, you will receive an email about this accomplishment! You could also use this method for employee management - for example, when an employee starts work or when he/she leaves. As you can see, there are many possibilities with this method! However, there are some drawbacks. 1. You need an email address to subscribe so this might not be convenient for everyone 2. You cannot subscribe to multiple events in Amazon DynamoDB (e.g. when an employee leaves AND when an employee starts work. To overcome these problems we will combine both methods (I & II. into one workflow where we will create a table in Amazon DynamoDB that triggers SMS messages when new records are inserted in it. This way, anyone who subscribes to this event will automatically receive text messages when needed!
