Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Colligso TextIn

Amazon CloudWatch is an Amazon Web Service that helps you monitor and manage your applications. It provides you with metrics on everything from system level resources to CPU, disk I/O, network traffic. These metrics are called as CloudWatch metrics.CloudWatch also provides other services like Amazon CloudWatch Logs, Amazon CloudWatch Events, Amazon CloudWatch Alarms etc.Colligso TextIn is a cloud based platform that lets users convert documents into PDF or Image formats. It provides the facility of converting files stored in Amazon S3 storage to PDF or Image formats. A user can easily integrate Amazon CloudWatch with Colligso Textin for billing purposes. For example. suppose a user has used 20000 PDF conversions in a month and he/she is using Colligso TextIn Standard Edition and he/she is charged for AWS usage. In this case he/she will be charged for calls made to Colligso TextIn API. After integration of CloudWatch and Colligso TextIn, billing information will be available in CloudWatch console and users can make use of it.

    Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Colligso TextIn

CloudWatch provides a set of metrics which can be accessed by using different API calls. There are two main categories of APIs:We will make use of GetMetricStatistics API call for integration purposes.

  • Create an AWS account if it is not created already

2. Create a new IAM user in the AWS panelThis step is done so that there are no charges for the API calls made by the user. If the user's account is billed for any charges, then the cost will be distributed across the user's AWS account and not to the IAM user's account.3. Make an API call to create an S3 bucket for storing files and start uploading files to Amazon S3 bucket4. Install an SDK and add credentials of "AWS Access Key Id" and "AWS Secret Access Key" into Credentials file (in C:Usersuser_nameAppDataRoamingColligsoTextInCredentials)5. Log in as the user and click on "Create Account" option6. Now go to https://aws-portal.amazon.com/gp/aws/developer/account/index.html and create a new account if one is not already created7. Add IAM role named "CloudWatchAccess" to the role policy section of IAM user which was created in step 28. Launch "Amazon CloudWatch" Console from the link provided above or from the AWS panel9. Under the Metrics tab, click on "Create Metric" and enter details as shown below

  • After clicking on Create Metric, an "Edit Metric Definition" page will open up in which you can add more details about your metric. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page and click on "Attach Policy" link whose description is as shown below
  • On the Attach Policy page, under "Type" select "Custom" and enter text as shown below
  • After entering policy details, click on "Attach Policy" button and go back to previous page
  • On the same page scroll down to "Sample Metric" section and check both boxes as shown below
  • Now click on "Create Metric" button. This completes all the steps required for creating a new metric in CloudWatch
  • Go back to the Colligso TextIn website and sign in. Then click on Manage Account option on the top right corner of the page
  • Under the Account Information section, click on Edit button beside Profile Name that shows your Colligso TextIn username
  • Scroll down until you find AWS Credentials section and paste your access key ID (AKID. and secret access key (SAKID. here and click on Update button
  • Now add a new endpoint by clicking on New Endpoint link whose description is as shown below
  • Fill up all the details as shown in picture below and click on Continue button when done
  • Once you have clicked on Continue button, a popup named "Endpoint Details" will appear. In this popup you will need to enter all details asked for
  • After adding all details click on Save button which is located at the bottom left corner of this popup
  • Now click on Activate button which is located at the bottom left corner of your screen or just refresh your browser once you have added all details on Endpoint Details popup. This completes all steps required for configuring your account with Colligso TextIn
  • Go back to the AWS panel and click on "Cloudwatch" link, which will take you to your newly created metric page at https://console.aws.amazon.com/cloudwatch/home#/metrics/Your-MetricName-here where Your-MetricName-here should be replaced with your actual metric name. Then under Select Metric Dimensions tab check all four checkboxes as shown below
  • Now go back to Colligso TextIn website by clicking on Site link at the top left corner of Cloudwatch Metric page and enter login credentials here if you have not logged into Colligso TextIn before after adding new endpoint in step 18 above. If you have logged in before then you must log out first before logging back in again. After login a popup will appear asking you to confirm some changes made in your account by Colligso TextIn (after adding new endpoint. Click on Confirm Changes button after checking every detail if they are correct or not. After clicking on Confirm Changes button you will see a popup saying "Settings saved successfully". This means that your account has been successfully integrated with Colligso TextIn. At this moment you can start using API calls to integrate Amazon CloudWatch with Colligso TextIn. We will learn about how these API calls work later in this article.
  • Now we will make use of GetMetricStatistics API call to retrieve number of conversions done by us in our account in a month (30 days. In order to do this we need to pass two parameters to GetMetricStatistic API call. GetMetricStatistics API call takes two parameters namely Period (day, week, month, year etc.. and Statistic (sum, average etc.. For retrieving conversion statistics we will use Statistic parameter as sum. So now we need to make an API call with 30 days as period so that we get 30 values each representing number of conversions done during one day. So now we need to make an API call with 30 days as period so that we get 30 values each representing number of conversions done during one day. To do this, we will use datepart function in Python. Datepart function takes date as input parameter and returns certain parts of date like year, month etc. In our case we will give datepart function month as input parameter so that it gives us month part of given date which can be passed as period to GetMetricStatistic API call.  For example. If today's date is 1st August then datepart function will give us 8th month as output parameter because today is 8th day of August which is month 8 according to Gregorian calendar used in most countries like India, USA etc. Datepart function operates similarly for any other date also because datepart function does not depend upon Gregorian calendar used today but it depends upon Julian calendar used by ancient Romans hence it works similarly for any other date also. So if we have 4th June today then datepart function will give us 6th month as output parameter because today is 6th day of June which is month 6 according to Julian calendar used by Romans hence it works similarly for any other date also. But what if we don't know what day it is? For example. What if we don't know today's date? What if we want to know today's date without knowing anything about Julian or Gregorian calendars? To do this we can use Python calendar module because it returns current date as string value and it does not depend upon Julian or Gregorian calendar used by anyone but it depends upon Unix Time which is defined by Unix Time Zone Converter . You can read more about it here . So we can use Unix Time Zone Converter API call to get current Unix Time and then convert Unix Time into date using Python Calendar module . Python Calendar module takes Unix Time integer value as input parameter and returns corresponding date string value . By doing this we can retrieve current date even without knowing anything about Julian or Gregorian calendars but only Unix Time Zone Converter API call which returns Unix Time integer value .  So now we need to make an API call with
