    What is Amazon CloudWatch?

Amazon CloudWatch provides monitoring for AWS resources and applications in real-time. You can get statistics about your AWS resources, such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances, at any time.“Amazon CloudWatch is a web service that monitors AWS resources and notifies you when they require attention.”CloudWatch API enables developers to access and manage data from CloudWatch. Users can write applications using the CloudWatch API or the Management Console.The information collected from CloudWatch is available in the form of metrics. A metric is a value that is tracked over time. A metric is composed of a name, a value, and a unit. You can store metrics in different buckets. The buckets are metrics information stored in CloudWatch. Different sets of metrics are categorized into different buckets (for example, Amazon S3 bucket has information about Amazon S3.You can get metrics by using the AWS Management Console, AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), or the API. You can also use the AWS SDKs to collect metrics.

    What is SharePoint?

Microsoft SharePoint is a server software that provide collaboration solutions for an organization. SharePoint allows users to organize documents, discussions, tasks, events, and contacts in one place called SharePoint site.SharePoint Server comes with built-in authentication and authorization services which allows organizations to create customized security policies. An administrator can define who can see and edit what document library and what item within those libraries. For example, an administrator can define that only sales manager and above users have permissions to edit all documents in the sales folder.Azure Active Directory (AD. supports single sign-on with Microsoft Office 365, Windows Azure, and other cloud services. In addition to supporting cloud services, Azure AD supports single sign-on for on-premises applications that use forms-based authentication such as Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 or later.“Azure Active Directory (also known as Azure AD. is Microsoft's cloud-based identity and access management service that enables businesses to manage user identities from a central location.”Cloudwatch acts as a hub linking SharePoint with Amazon Web Services (AWS. It collects all the statistics from SharePoint and sends it into AWS where further analysis is done through various tools like Cloudtrail, Cloudwatch logs etc., so that we can get better information about our application’s resource utilization and performance. AWS monitoring helps us to determine if there was any unauthorized access attempted on the application, so that we can fix any loopholes in our applications.

    Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and SharePoint

We will integrate Amazon CloudWatch with Microsoft SharePoint by installing the CloudWatch agent on a Windows Server running SharePoint 2016 on premises or in Azure IaaS. The Agent will send events containing performance metrics from SharePoint to CloudWatch. We can analyze these events to gain insight into how our SharePoint environment is performing. We can also use Amazon EC2 instances to host our SharePoint application in the cloud and connect them to CloudWatch using the Agent as well. This way we can monitor performance of our EC2 instance running SharePoint in real time.

1. Setup Amazon CloudWatch Logs agent:Open up Server Manager on your Windows Server and Install “Apps for active directory”  if not already installed.Go to Manage > Add Roles And Features and add “AD DS and AD LDS Tools” feature.Once the installation is completed open up PowerShell on your server as an Administrator and run “Install-Module -Name AWSPowerShell”Now type “Connect-AWS -AccessKey <accesskey> -SecretKey <secretkey>”Now install the CloudWatch agent using following command “Install-AWSCmdlet -ModuleName AWSPowerShell -DelegateAccount <yourusername> -Verbose”Once the installation is finished install the .NET 4.5 Framework on your server using “Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework-45-Features” command.Now start the service by running “Start-Service -Name AWSCloudWatchLogsAgent” command. Open up PowerShell on your server as an Administrator and run “Install-Module -Name AWSPowerShell”Once the installation is completed open up PowerShell on your server as an Administrator and run “Install-AWSCmdlet -ModuleName AWSPowerShell -DelegateAccount <yourusername> -Verbose”Once the installation is finished install the .NET 4.5 Framework on your server using “Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework-45-Features” command.Now start the service by running “Start-Service -Name AWSCloudWatchLogsAgent” command.2. Configure Windows Firewall:Open up PowerShell on your server as an Administrator and run “Set-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)" -Enabled True” command. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Windows Firewall > Advanced Settings > Inbound Rules > New Rule > Select Port > TCP > Specific Local ports > enter 1433 > Apply > Ok > Close3. Configure IIS:Open up Internet Information Service on your SharePoint Server using “iisreset oforce” command.Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS. Manager > Select your server name > Application Pools > Right click on App Pool you want to configure > Advanced Settings > DWORD InheritSecurity = 1 > Apply > Ok > Close Now go back to Internet Information Services (IIS. Manager > Select your server name > Select Sites > Default Web Site > Double click on Require SSL connection checkbox > Uncheck it > Ok > Close4. Configure Trusted Hosts. Open up Internet Information Services (IIS. Manager on your SharePoint Server using “iisreset oforce” command .Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS. Manager > Select your server name > Sites Click on Default Web Site > double click on Server Certificates > Select your certificate > Edit Feature Permissions > Click on Edit Feature Permissions button next to Trusted Root Certification Authorities Click on Add button next to Trusted Root Certification Authorities Click on Select a certificate radio button select certificate from your certificate store The certificate must be marked as exportable under Personal Information Exchange –PKCS #12 format Click Ok Click Ok again Step 5 & 6 may not be required but we recommend enabling it just in case you plan on implementing Single Sign On Open up Internet Information Services (IIS.
