Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Mattermost

Cloud computing is the use of a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer. It is an infrastructure for sharing resources and services among multiple users. Cloud computing provides easy accessibility to the technology resources through the internet.

As per the definition given by cloud computing foundation, “Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services. that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This cloud model promotes availability and is composed of five essential characteristics, three service models, and four deployment models”

Amazon Web Services (AWS. is the most popular cloud computing platform today. AWS is a collection of various services including Compute, Storage & Databases. AWS provides these services as a comprehensive suite of cloud-based solutions that make it easier for developers to build more scalable, performant, and available applications. AWS also helps in reducing the cost of building and operating applications by taking care of all infrastructure needs.

Mattermost is an open-source business messaging app with a focus on speed and security. Mattermost keeps conversations in one place and allows users to search from one single location across public channels, private channels, direct messages, and user groups. A secure open source alternative to Slack.

Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Mattermost

    What is Amazon CloudWatch?

CloudWatch is a web service for monitoring the state of your AWS resources and metrics collected by them. CloudWatch performs statistical analysis of the metrics collected over a period of time, and generates alerts when some threshold is crossed. CloudWatch can collect data from various sources such as usage of different EC2 Instances like CPU usage, latency issues etc. With the help of CloudWatch you can also view logs generated by your instances and assign an SLA to your application. CloudWatch stores all this information in its database called the CloudWatch Logs which can be used to correlate across different resources monitored by CloudWatch. You can monitor these logs using console or using AWS CLI or API calls. CloudWatch automatically creates alarms on any issues detected by it using these logs. You can also create custom alarms for any metrics. In case a resource fails to meet its SLA criteria then you can manually create an alarm for that resource using CloudWatch. You can also integrate other services like S3 Buckets into CloudWatch to get their usage information and perform analysis on that data. Another important feature of CloudWatch is that it allows you to create Lambda functions which execute based on certain rules set on the CloudWatch Alarms. So you don’t need to worry about writing any code or managing infrastructure for this purpose.

    What is Mattermost?

Mattermost is a private cloud messaging which is an open-source alternative to Slack. It is written using Golang which makes it fast and scalable. Mattermost uses Amazon S3 as its data store allowing you to have unlimited message history which saves money. Mattermost integrates perfectly with other AWS services like CloudFormation, EC2 etc.. It also supports LDAP/AD integration with TLS encryption making it very secure. Mattermost supports group chats and private chat rooms for team collaboration where all messages are encrypted end to end making it impossible for anyone else except the chat owner to read the messages. It also supports channels which are similar to Slack where you can organize your discussions into channels based on their subject matter and keep all your conversations in one place instead of having separate threads for each topic. You can also integrate other services like GIT/HUB/BitBucket into Mattermost allowing you to discuss code changes right from within Mattermost without leaving the app itself. Integration with Slack is another great feature of Mattermost which allows you to view all your Slack chat history right inside Mattermost so there is no need to switch between apps for viewing chat history etc.. Mattermost also has fully customizable themes and rich notification options which allow you to configure notifications according to your preferences. Though it has been built over Golang but it has great UI/UX which allows you to work faster without having to spend too much time configuring settings etc.. You can download the latest version from Github free of charge.

Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Mattermost

In this section we will discuss how you can integrate Amazon CloudWatch and Mattermost together so that you can receive notifications about errors as soon as they occur in any of your EC2 instances using Amazon CloudWatch Alarms and Mattermost Chat rooms. You will first install Mattersot on your EC2 instance and then run it as a service on the host machine using Upstart Scheduler which will allow you to receive alerts about any issues as soon as they occur without having to manually check for them using Mattermost console or API calls. Once the installation part is done we will proceed towards creating an alarm in CloudWatch that will trigger alert in case an error occurs in any of our EC2 instances being monitored by Mattermost service running in that instance. Finally we will create a simple Lambda function using Node JS which will execute whenever an alarm based on it is triggered so that we can receive notifications about errors in our EC2 instances as soon as they occur without having to manually log into EC2 host machine more often than necessary.

Benefits of Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Mattermost

This technique has many benefits over manual monitoring because in case of manual monitoring we need to login into our EC2 instance more often than necessary whereas in case we are using this method it is possible for us to receive alerts whenever an error occurs in our EC2 instances without having to login into it more often than necessary so this technique saves us time and effort while improving efficiency at the same time..

The process to integrate Amazon CloudWatch and Mattermost may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick solution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
