Amazon CloudWatch and Amazon Seller Central are two different services offered by Amazon Web Services that provide help to the developers in improving the quality of their applications, along with a report on the performance of the applications. CloudWatch is used to monitor the resources for any misconfiguration or misbehavior which can be corrected before the performance is affected, while Seller Central provides information on the sales and operations.
Amazon CloudWatch and Seller Central are combined as one product "Amazon CloudWatch Seller Metrics" which allows integration of these two services into a single application. Through this integration, the developers can use both CloudWatch and Seller Central to get comprehensive information about their application and products.
CloudWatch provides monitoring for Amazon EC2 instances and other AWS resources. It gives service level agreements and performance metrics like CPU utilization, memory utilization, disk usage etc. Also, it gives notifications and alarms for the deviations from the expected values. This helps in keeping track of the overall health of the application by analyzing the trends of these values over time. The user can set up alarms at various intervals so as to be notified when a threshold is reached or exceeded. Each alarm can be configured to send notifications via email, SMS, SQS, SNS or HTTP.
Seller Central gives information about Amazon Marketplace including sales volumes and revenue generated from each marketplace seller account. The user can consolidate all the data from different accounts into a single report. This helps in comparing the metrics like units sold, revenue, inventory etc. of each account side by side. It also allows access to reports like Top Sellers, Units Sold and Listing Performance, which are useful for sellers to improve their business.
The integration of CloudWatch and Seller Central is done through an agent called "CloudWatch Seller Metrics Agent". This agent keeps track of the metrics from various resources being monitored by CloudWatch and sends them to Seller Central.
It is integrated into the application server using an API provided by CloudWatch allowing the users to access the performance data being collected from different sources using one interface. The user has to specify the metrics he wants to collect in a configuration file named as 'aws-agent.config' based on the type of application being developed. This file contains details like which resources are being monitored by CloudWatch and what metrics are being retrieved from them. This config file is then passed on to the agents running on all the servers where the application is deployed. Once all these agents are configured and started, it gathers all the metrics specified in aws-agent.config file, compiles them into a single file which contains all the relevant information about the application's performance and sends them to Seller Central through its REST API. This data is then stored in Amazon DynamoDB tables under seller account for further analysis and comparison.
The integration of these two services eliminates the need for developers to monitor different systems for different metrics for their applications directly as they can now access all of them through a single interface i.e. Seller Central. Also, this integration saves time spent on developing specialized software to gather these metrics as well as cost incurred on maintaining such software. The best part is that it is free for all AWS customers who have an active seller account with Amazon Marketplace and there is no charge even if they don't have any sales or revenues from their products.
