Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Airtable

A modern cloud infrastructure requires an advanced monitoring system to track the status of each component in real time. These systems must be able to collect and record all data from different components and synchronize with a database that serves as an aggregator. In this project, we are going to build a monitoring system for a simple cloud infrastructure using Amazon CloudWatch and Airtable. This solution will allow us to monitor our cloud server and also have the ability to quickly access records of the information collected through Airtable.

In this section, we are going to detail the integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Airtable. First, we need to configure our server instance to send the data to Amazon CloudWatch. Then, we are going to connect the database to the instance. Finally, we are going to create a schema and build an automated process that collects the data sent by CloudWatch and inserts them into Airtable.

    Integration of Amazon CloudWatch and Airtable

In order to integrate Amazon CloudWatch and Airtable, we first need to install the aws-cli library on both our local machine and our server instance. Once aws-cli is installed, we use it to install a module called node-cloudwatch which is used for sending data to CloudWatch.

Once node-cloudwatch is installed on both our local machine and server instance, we can create a file called config.json which contains details about both our local machine and server instance. This file needs to contain the private key and secret key used to encrypt/decrypt requests sent to Amazon CloudWatch. The following snippet shows how the config.json file might look like:

We now need to install two additional libraries called node-http and node-cron on our server instance. These libraries are used by node-cloudwatch library to send data to AWS.

The following command can be used to send data to AWS:

node /path/to/file/cloudwatch/index.js /path/to/config.json

Once the file is running, it would start sending data every 5 minutes to AWS. It would also send a request once an hour to update the value of some of the metrics so that they don't remain 0 all the time.

Once the integration between Amazon CloudWatch and Airtable is complete, we can start creating database records of information captured by CloudWatch on a regular basis. We can create API endpoints on our server instance that listens for POST requests from Airtable and then creates corresponding records on the database. We can create more than one functions to handle other database operations as well such as updating values or deleting records. In addition, we can create scheduled tasks that run these functions at specific times or dates.
