Integration of Alegra and Google Tasks

Alegra, according to the Alegra website, is a productivity suite of applications that “empowers you to manage tasks from planning to fplow-ups.”[1] It was created by a group of students from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as a project for the Google Summer of Code 2007. In addition to Alegra, it includes a calendar, a to-do list, a task manager, and a planner. It is written in Python and uses the Django framework. It is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2.[2]

Google Tasks is a service that provides a user with a list of their tasks and allows them to share their tasks with others.[3] It allows the user to create lists and share those lists with others. The tasks can be updated by any user with permission to view the task list. Google Tasks allows the user to add reminders to tasks and even update tasks with location data.[4] Google Tasks was developed by the same group of students who developed Alegra.[5]

Integration of Alegra and Google Tasks

Integration between Alegra and Google Tasks can be accomplished through two methods. synchronization and federation. Synchronization means that all changes made on one application are automatically updated on the other application. Federation means that changes made on one application are sent to the other application, but those changes aren’t automatically updated.[6] Both synchronization and federation can be implemented using web services or an API.[7] It would be most advantageous to implement synchronization through an API because synchronizing via an API would mean that no software needs to be installed on the client side. If synchronization takes place over an API and both parties (Alegra and Google Tasks. use HTTP as a transport protocp then the endpoints of the API must be standardized, which means that they must comply with the Web Service Definition Language or WSDL. WSDL defines the interface that is being used for this API.[8]

Seventh, users can synchronize their tasks between multiple devices.[9] Eighth, people don’t have to worry about losing their data if one device fails or if there is an Internet outage for an extended period of time. Ninth, synchronization allows users to keep both applications up-to-date so they don’t have to worry about adding new tasks to the same list twice. And lastly, users can also store their tasks in two places so they don’t have to worry about losing their data if one device fails.
